Kansas City Chiefs 2024 draft pick ready to handle the expectation of competing for starting position
Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs addressed one of their biggest roster needs when they selected offensive tackle Kingsley Suamataia in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Suamataia has a huge frame at 6-foot-6 and 326 pounds with 34 1/8-inch arms. He has the athleticism and explosiveness to be successful in the NFL but does need to improve technique and quickness with his hands and feet. At just 21 years of age, there is still plenty for the Chiefs coaching staff to unlock with Suamataia's game.

The question is, can he get up to speed quickly enough to begin the season as the Chiefs' starting left tackle? General manager Brett Veach has stated that Suamataia and second year player Wanya Morris will compete for the job.

Morris, who started four games at LT for the Chiefs last year, probably has a slight edge on the starting gig as of now, but that is far from etched in stone. While speaking to the media on Sunday, Suamataia said that he can handle the high expectations put on him.

"Most definitely. Just come in and work every day," Suamataia said about competing for a spot on the offensive line. "I’ve got to put my best foot forward and outwork the guy in front of me. I definitely love all the guys that are here, coming in as a rookie trying to gain all the knowledge I can so I can learn the playbook the best, so I can potentially be out there and play next to them. It’s definitely a great opportunity for me, I’m super excited. I’m happy, (head) coach (Andy Reid) can put that on me that I can play, I’m ready.”

Suamataia is in great hands with Reid, offensive coordinator Matt Nagy and offensive line coach Andy Heck. He also has a rich family bloodline that includes current NFL players Penei Sewell, Puca Nakua, Noah Sewell and Nephi Sewell. If Suamataia can't earn the starting job this year, he'll likely be the Chiefs' swing tackle who can fill in for Morris or right tackle Jawaan Taylor when needed.
