Eagles DC Vic Fangio hesitant to call Quinyon Mitchell a starter
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio addressed the media for the first time since he was hired back in January.

One of the many questions he was asked was naturally about 2024 first-round draft pick Quinyon Mitchell.

Fangio played a major role in the Eagles' decision to select Mitchell over several other elite corners, and while he believes that's "their guy," he knows the rookie still has a lot to learn.

"He's obviously got good movement," Fangio said. "He's got good size for a corner. He's going to have to adapt to the NFL game, covering NFL receivers, NFL schemes in the passing game. There's a lot to learn, but we think he's the right guy, emotionally and mentally, to do that. And, hopefully, he'll play dividends quickly rather than later. But he's going to be one of the many competing."

The Eagles' cornerback room runs rather deep now with some new and old additions.

The room features Darius Slay, James Bradberry, Avonte Maddox, Isaiah Rodgers, Zech McPhearson, Kelee Ringo, and fellow rookie Cooper DeJean.

The Eagles also signed undrafted free-agent cornerback Shon Stephens earlier this week.

That's a lot of guys that Mitchell is up against this summer. But as a Round 1 draft pick, there's no doubt Mitchell will be a starter come the Eagles' Week 1 international matchup in Brazil.

However, according to Fangio, he will still have to earn that starting job.
