Detroit Lions GM Issues Stark NFL Draft Warning
Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports

The city of Detroit is hosting the 2024 NFL Draft, and Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes had a stark warning about how things may play out for the hometown team when the first round gets underway on Thursday, April 25.

Presumably, there will be tens of thousands of Lions fans packing into Campus Martius Park and Hart Plaza for the festivities, which gave Holmes some pause during the team’s pre-draft press conference.

Since the Lions could be in the sweet spot to trade out of the first-round, in order to acquire draft capital this year and in future years, Holmes just hopes fans don’t boo or hold it against the front office if such a move goes down.

“That’s something that, we have to do the right thing for the organization,” Holmes said, via Christian Booher of SI.com. “If it makes sense and it lines up and it’s the right thing to do, then we have to do the right thing and so, say that happens, where the fans have been waiting there all night for this pick and we get an offer that we really can’t turn down, we’ve got to do the right thing.

“Hopefully our fans will forgive us. We won’t expect immediate forgiveness right then and there, but hopefully when the season starts and that player selected is out there, we can get past that. I totally understand that.”

Brad Holmes’, Detroit Lions’ Strong Recent NFL Draft Track Record

Since his arrival as general manager, the job Holmes has down in terms of overhauling the roster and significantly bolstering the talent through the draft has been nothing short of remarkable.

In the three years since Holmes became GM, and built the Lions into the reigning NFC North champions, Detroit has added the likes of wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, offensive tackle Penai Sewell, elite edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson, emerging deep-threat Jameson Williams, safety Kerby Joseph, explosive and elusive running back Jahmyr Gibbs, thumping linebacker Jack Campbell, burgeoning tight end Sam LaPorta, and dominant safety Brian Branch, to name a few, through the NFL Draft.

If the Lions do move back and continue to add to future NFL Draft war chests, it could prove to be all the ammunition Holmes needs to continue adding young, explosive, and most importantly, affordable players to one of the most exciting rosters in the league.
