The Celtics' role players could win them a championship

The Boston Celtics' top-six rotation has been a major talking point this season. Joe Mazzulla has six players that could legitimately have an argument for being an All-Star in any given season. That incredible talent level allowed the Celtics to secure the first seed in the Eastern Conference with 11 games remaining.

Yet, Boston's bench players could tip the scales in their favor once the playoffs begin. Sam Hauser, Payton Pritchard and Luke Kornet have quietly produced exceptional seasons within their roles. They provide quality depth off the bench and have all proven capable of stepping into a starting role.

"The thing is, they don't have the names off the bench, but they get it done," former NBA player Theo Pinson said during a recent episode of the "Run Your Race" podcast. "Sam Hauser can shoot the p--- out the ball. Payton Pritchard can shoot it, he can just score in general...And they just got Tillman. He's been in playoff games...Shout out to Boston, y'all look really good out there."

Teams generally slim their rotation down in the postseason. Mazzulla will likely stick with seven or eight players as his go-to guys. However, having so much talent on the bench is a luxury, as it allows the coaching staff to make changes based on matchups. Kornet has struggled against physical bigs, so it would make more sense to see Xavier Tillman, for example.

Brad Stevens has constructed a deep and talented roster. That will allow Mazzulla and the Celtics coaching staff to feel confident in any scenario. Most importantly, though, it will provide cover should injuries occur.

Boston is the favorite to win this year's NBA championship. Its performances and talent have proven its capability. Yet its depth could get them over the finish line.
