San Francisco Giants Catcher Blake Sabol Makes Baseball History in Loss to Seattle Mariners
USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco Giants lost to the Seattle Mariners, 6-5, on Monday night, but it wasn't the fault of Giants rookie catcher Blake Sabol.

Sabol hit two home runs in the game, including a two-run blast off Bryan Woo and a three-run shot off Paul Sewald in the bottom of the ninth inning.

With the performance, Sabol did something that no other player in baseball history has ever done.

Per @OptaSTATS on Twitter:

Blake Sabol of the @SFGiants is the first rookie catcher in MLB history to have 2+ HR and 5+ RBI while driving in all of his team's runs in a game.

His second home run gave the Giants a chance to come back and win the game. After his homer made it 6-5, the team brought the winning run to the plate but couldn't cash in.

After the 2-4 effort, Sabol is now hitting .255 this season. He's got 10 homers and 33 RBI across 200 at-bats. The former Pittsburgh Pirates draft pick (2019 - USC) was acquired this offseason in a trade from the Cincinnati Reds and made his debut on March 30.

The loss dropped the Giants to 46-39 on the season. They are currently in third place in the National League West. They trail the first-place Diamondbacks by four games and the second-place Dodgers by 1.5 games.

The Mariners moved to 41-42 and can get back to .500 with a win on Tuesday.

The two teams will meet on Tuesday for a July 4 matinee. First pitch is 4:35 p.m. ET.
