My New Family Member
His name is Charles Barkley McLovin and he is my new dog. He is a Boston/Beagle. He is not too big because i cant have a big dog while im renting my house. He is very quiet, hasnt even barked since i had him so far. He does of course pee in the house, making me mad. I know it takes time to train a dog, but don't you wish that a dog can just be born knowing to go to the restroom outside and to eat his food out of the dish?
This dog is stressing me out some because he sniffs everything and he loves eating grass, but he won't eat his dog food. The second day i had him Brandon and I left him in the backyard for like 30 minutes and when we got back he had crawled under the gate and run away. Luckily, i have great neighbors. It was funny because when i was down the street i told one of my neighbors and she said she hadn't seen him, but by the time i got to my house and got out the car i saw another lady walk out the door saying "about 30 to 45 minutes ago and he has a red collar." i looked at Brandon and said "she talking about me" lol. They all were looking for him, even their kids were on bikes. He turned up two houses down and i was so happy. Now i watch him every time he goes outside. I love him already. All he does is cuddle and sleep and he is quiet. I just wish he would stop eating grass.

Ahhh GO!!!!
I love the blog...one of your best ones yet. Very funny. You and Charles are cute...you look very happy in that picture.
GO TRAIL BLAZERSS -
That is perfect! Now you can't bend down to pick up Poo, so have Brandon do it!
Hahahahaah! -
What a cute puppy Greg! That picture of the two of you, we can't tell which one is the Puppy! Awww! Love you Sweetie!
Now let me tell you the best way to get Pee out of the carpet:
Get a towel and soak up all pee
get boiling hot water & add some vinegar to the water
pour on the spot and then take another towel & soak that up, (step on the towels)
place a clean towel over the wet spot until dry
Now ask Brandon to use the Bathroom from now on! hahahaha!
Actually works, remember my Afghan Angel, we had a few problems with her!
-
whats the matter with her
-
She's fine Greg, Don't worry, she peed in the house when we first got her! Now she is great!
-
Haha, you guys are too cute. I used to have a beagle, and he would eat grass when his stomach was upset to make himself throw up. Yeah, I know that's gross, but maybe you should talk to the vet and make sure he isn't having stomach problems... good luck with the puppy poop!
-
thanks
-
The traditional "Get drafted first round, move out to the new city, get a dog" move, I like it!
-
Hey Greg, that's funny about the dog. Keep getting better.
BTW, were you at Best Buy last Friday? My first period teacher said one of his friends saw you there and you were so tall that his head didn't even get past your crutches.
Best of luck. -
yeah im always at best buy
-
Nonono, dont you see Greg? Your neighbors are the ones who *stole* the dog. They're just orchestrating a series of events to get in your good graces till they rob you blind... dont fall for it!
-
The McLovin last name is great.. Never saw you as a dog person though Greg. :)
-
yeah i love dogs
-
yeah i love dogs
-
Question for ya greg, any plans for this year since you wont be playing ball? back to school perhaps?
-
online classes
-
Greg, I'm glad you didn't get a Cavalier King Charles. Those muppets are a misery. Be well.
-
Cute dog. Must be just a puppy. Didn't know you sported the glasses but you look smart.
-
yeah i where contacts when i play
-
bacon is the key, take him outside to pee, when he goes do your best happy dance around him and give him a piece of bacon, HOUSE BROKEN IN ONE TRIP, you give your dog a piece of pig after he goes he'll never lift his leg in your house again.
-
ill try that
-
nice name!! get a crate, and don't let him on the furniture.
-
We live in your neighborhood. We want to bring Charles Barkley a new toy. Can we come visit him?
-
i'm glad that you got a mutt. mutts tend to retain the best that their breeds have to offer (2 of my 3 dogs are mutts). you also tend to avoid the genetic conditions that pure-breeds can have. if you haven't found a vet yet, my wife is one of the best in the area (check out frontier vetinerary hospital). keep us posted on the dog.
-
awesome, now you're truly a Portlander, we love our dogs here, looks like you picked a winner too
-
now you're officially a Portlander, we love our dogs here, and it looks like you choose a winner--plus there's no better remedy when you're feeling down
GO blazers -
Nice dog
-
lol i love the name greg
you are so funny -
Greg!!! Glad to see your video and see first hand that you are doing okay. Glad Brandon is there to help out AND I know he keeps you laughing. Just PLEASE, don't let him drive you around town! :-) We're all thinking about you and praying for a quick recovery. You have the drive and perseverance to overcome...and you'll do it with class and dignity. We're so proud of you...as good as you are on the court, you are an even better young man. Hi To Ms. Zoe and we're keeping a good eye on Anthony. Take care, sweet pea...and make sure you say hi to Brandon. He STILL owes me an email. Mrs. Sivertson
-
i will definitely tell him that how are you doing mrs sivertson
-
Nice dog
-
How old is that dog??
-
5months
-
Hey, Greg. Great name for your dog! You might try getting some "puppy pads". They're like these square mats you can put down in the house that are scented to encourage them to pee on them. Anytime the dog pees in the house, take him outside right away and eventually he should figure it out. Also, make sure if he pees in the house to clean up the spot right away with special cleaner that will remove the scent, otherwise the dog will keep peeing in that spot. Good luck, raising a pup is a lot of work, but it's worth it! I hope you're feeling better. Keep your head up, man!
-
Do you have a real myspace? not one of those fake ones that a crazy fan makes?
-
That, and also, do you know if Brandon has a real myspace?
-
He doesn't. He already confirmed that. I don't know about Brandon though.
-
Very cute dog Greg. Continue to have a good recovery.
-
Get that dog a diaper. Looks sharp too.
-
i just got a beagle and it does all the same stuff as yours except not eat his food. Hes probably going to start biting everything soon.
-
"Charles Barkley McLovin"
What a great name. -
He could be the new yardbarker mascot.
-
I love the name!
-
My dogs eat grass too.
Its normal.
Wolves and coyotes eat grass and plants also in the wild.
I looked it up on the web just to make sure.
But your not supposed to let your dog use any salad dressing.
So keep that toward the back of the fridge.
I have also heard that some high class dogs like croutons and parmesan cheese.
Greg...
I am sooooo glad your a blazer!!!
Love your dog!
PS...attached is a pic of one of my dogs.
Name is Canyon
She eats anything...not just grass.
-
Like one of the posters already mentioned, reward your puppy when he poops/pisses outside. Give him a treat and a nice belly rub. However, if he poops/pisses in the house you have to do what you mom would do to you if you pooped/pissed in her house.
-
Hey Greg, this is my first time commenting on your blog, so first of all I would like to say, Hey man, and, I'm sorry you have to go through this difficult set back right now, but I'm sure you have some good doctors and therapists and you'll get back to your old self again.
Now, to teach your dog not to pee in the house. First you get a little kid gate and you pin Barkley into one room of the house. Next, you cover the floor with newspaper. Where ever the dog doesn't go to the bathroom, remove those pieces of newspaper. Finally when it is down to 1 or 2 pieces of newspaper, start moving them slowly towards the door and eventually outside, and eventually take them away...that's what my parents did with our puppy about 3 years ago. It worked well.
Good luck to ya man. -
my boi how you feeling
-
Greg, I absolutely loved this last blog! And your latest video is great. You seem to care about your fans and we car about you, so thanks very much for the updates! We love them...and McLovin is adorable!
-
By the way Greg... my knee also has given me a lot of problems too... all from basketball from when I was younger (I went to high school with AC Green, and played ball with him a lot when we were young) How is your recovery so far? I have been wondering if I should have the same procedure done to my knee. I've had three surgeries in 2 years on it.
-
Great dog Greg! That's a great friend to keep you company while you heal. Take good care of yourself, and God bless you.

Hey Greg, I'm with the other comment about you being there on opening night. As a first time season ticket holder, I'll be there, & trust me you need to be witness to what Blazermania is all about. I know you got a taste downtown at the rally the day after the draft, but opening night in a sold out Rose Garden?....oh man, the place will be off the chain, and you won't believe the support that you'll recieve....I'm telling you, be there!
-
I love the name. It seriously made me laugh the first time I read it. The dog is a total cutie, he will keep you good company while you rehab...
-
Cute dog--just what the doctor ordered! Have you ever watched "The Dog Whisperer" on the National Geographic Channel? Sound boring, I know, but it's extremely entertaining and informative. My wife and I wish we'd watched that show when we first got our dog.
-
Greg
Dogs are great medicine, and the best therapy around. I hope your dog brings you years of enjoyment. We have a Boston named Clyde. We got him when Clyde Drexler was in Portland retiring his jersey. He is such a blessing as well as a big responsibilty. Barkley is a cute name, but if he lives up to his namesake, you may have your hands full :)
Still praying for you!

Greg, your puppy is so cute it almost hurts.

Oh My ... Wonder what Chuck will say about you naming your dog after him?! Will he put you in his top 5 now?! (HA! I can see the commerical already!) Great, further feeding his ego!!! Yikes!
Here's my two or three unsolicited cents on the dog. Crate train him, he will not pee in his crate and it's a safe place for him to hang out, especially when you're not home. Take him outside several times using commands like 'let's go potty' and 'hurry up' and if he goes, reward with a lot of praise. My lab still eats grass... that's normal, especially when they have a stomach ache. Pick a food and stick with it... changing their food makes their stomach hurt. Lastly, everything is about exercise... especially with a young pup. Watch the Dog Whisperer or get one of his books, Cesar Milan.. very informative...but it's exercise, discipline then affection... being the pack leader... blah, blah, blah.
I can't believe I'm sitting here writing you dog lessons I've learned!!! HA! Congrat's on your new pup... hope you find it as rewarding as I do! ENjOY~ -

Puppies learn faster than human babies thank goodness....he will be fine in a few months....just remember to take him out about every two hours and after eating! Take him to the same spot and praise him every time he goes outside. He will learn fast and with a cool name like that will be a GREAT friend!
congrats on your new family member! -
that's cool greg, nice dog and nice name, i also have a beagle his name is charley , those great sniffers they have can be quite a chore, lockup the garbage can and don't leave any food out....lol

-
Awww, I love puppies. I totally can relate, my dog is part springer and the rest black lab - boy could she jump fences! Oh, btw don't let him eat grass, that actually makes them sick, I used to think it helped there sick tummies, but it doesn't because grazing animals like cows have really complex stomachs. Also, I learned dogs can't handle grapes and raisins, I'm such a bad mommy! I'm glad you're taking care of your body, and are able to rest. Explore Portland and don't get down, kay? :) I think it's crazy we're only 6 months apart, and I thought I was feeling the pressure!
~ the girl from the SEI Auction ;) -
Go to Lexidog-it's a dog daycare and store..They have everything for training Charles Barkley!!
It's on 10th in NW Portland!! -
Greg, I thot about getting a dog but decided against it since my old college buddy is already a handful. He comes over and drink all of my Jaeger and Redbull. He's been known to eat grass in my backyard if he drinks too much - so him and charles certainly have something in common.
I'll trade you pets for a week. deal?
-
G, bet anything that mike is laughing his ass off at that pic?
-
my old and wise pug, emi. chillin' in heaven now...she comes to me in visions like Obi-Wan-Kenobi though.

-
He likes eating grass? That dog knows whats up
-
Greg after you win a few titles with portland I found your next job. Dancing with the stars!!! you got some moves check it out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTy0sFcBCKw
-
Just got a new puppy myself...she sounds just like your puppy!
...and you'll be proud to know her name is Buckeye!!!
-
cute dog. grass helps them poo i think...
as long as it's pee in the house and not poo... -
Great TV show to watch for dog training tips. The Dog Whisperer...Its on Discovery channel. Cesar Millan (sp) is the trainer. The tips work if you are consistent and everybody is on board.
The key is to say your command once and make them do it. If you keep repeating yourself, sit, sit sit, sit,,,the dogs will get to a point where they think,,,I'll sit on the fourth "sit" and it will be OK. Its not..make them sit on the first one..If they don't sit on the first command physically make them sit and hold the position,,then give them alot of affection and/ or treat. Don't treat them every time. Kepp them guessing!
Also,,ask the Blazers to give you video of Arvidas Sabonis. He was a master big man,,his passing was incredible. I'm sure in your recovery-time your looking for stuff to do besides dog training.
Good Luck! -
That is too cool. I have a minature poodle "Sasha" and if you opened the door just a crack, she would squeeze through and it was on an popping. Fastest dog I had ever seen in my life. She could jump so high she would clear the puppy gate I had her enclosed in when I was out. When I would return instead of being enclosed, she would meet me at the door. LOL
Enjoy your dog and speedy recovery to you. -
hey Greg! Im happy to hear you have a puppy so now you wont feel the need to harrass mine when you come to visit! :-) its also good to know that your still doing great ( I cant imagine you doin otherwise!) grandma & grandpa r always asking about u! Ill let them know I left a message 4 you. keep your head up! make sure Brandon has the recipe down pat 4 blue raspberry koolaid!~1/2 bag of sugar for 1 packet of koolaid! lol!
-
You might look up Cesar Milan, the DOG WHISPERER, on the National Geographic channel, for some ideas on assuring your doggie is well-balanced and comfortable. Never to early to start the way you mean to go on! I love seeing you 'round my town (hope you liked the Chinese food?), keep the good attitude and you'll go far and be loved by many. #1 Exercise, #2 Discipline, #3 Affection works on much more than dogs - kids, spouses, athletes...! :-)
-
Haha, I love the dog Oden.
-
53. kelspeed great post. I think Greg should take you up on it. Greg, mclovin? are you eating at mcdonalds alot?
-
Greg can u send your signature to my mail it'll be very special to me my e-mail is qe245fo@yahoo.com.tw
thanks!
-
Thiis is what "chuck" will be doing when you are done with your bed. Better leave it in the living room for him!

-
Oh no ...first Qyntel Woods, then Michael Vick, now Greg. Everybody knows Beagles are a savage, vicious breed, meant only for dog fighting. You can't domesticate them. Sure they LOOK cute, but that photo and that name ain't fooling nobody. He's obviously a blood thristy killer. Don't do it Greg. Don't go down that path. Trade him in for a hamster while you still can.
P.S. If you keep him, and you eventually pass away (many, many years from now), are you going to leave all your money to him in your will, like Leona Helmsley? -

I picked up one of those clicker trainers from the pet store. It is basically clicking and bribing the dog with a treat when he does what you want. It worked well for me. My dog learned his name and how to sit in about half an hour. The house training is touch and go, but relatively successful.
-
Crate Train, Crate Train, Crate Train. It's not always easy listening to them whine and cry, but the crate is your best friend when it comes to training your dog.
-
Dogs are great to keep you company. There is nothing like their unconditional love or the whining and thumping of a tail in the morning, telling you they need to go outside to take a leak or plant a landmine. Give it time, you'll get there! :O)
-
Yo Greg, my dog's ready to play center for the Deeeee-triot basketball team right now.

-
adorable. and his collar and your shirt match...im sure you did that one on purpose. smooth moves.

Hey Greg, great choice. we have two beagle puppies 9 months and 7 months, they are tons of fun and work at the same time. They both love our two daughters as well. Good luck on your re-hab...
-
Greg, Get your puppy some wheatgrass. You can buy a flat at any pet store. He is craving chlorophyll, the living green matter in plants. This will aid his digestion.
-
Hi Greg,
You can "house break" your dog pretty easily. The crating method teaches the dog to hold their systems, because they wont go to the bathroom where they sleep. If your home you can keep the dog in a crate, for a few hours at a time. If he sleeps alot he probably wont mind. Also good to do if you are out of the house rehabbing. Then, as soon as you get home take the dog out of the crate and out of the house for bathroom time. Within a month you should be able to get rid of the crate. Also, don't leave him in there for more that six or seven hours.
As far as food, feed him at the same time everyday. and don't overfeed him, he'll get bored with his food. Those dried liver snacks will get his mind off the grass.
Best of luck with the knee.

Greg, Welcome to P-town! Its great having you! All good things come in time right? Can't wait to see on the hardwood! How would l contact you re: a huge event for local kids suffering with Cystic Fibrosis on Nov 2? You would be HUGE for them! I have 4 daughters and they convinced me to buy them a dog. Everytime the door opens she bolts! Who would think that something as little as a yorkie could run that fast! She is freakin fast!
-
He is so cute! My husband and I are going to be getting a beagle as well. They are adorable dogs!! Keep getting better! Go Blazers!!!!
-
Hope you are feeling better....oh and by the way....when puppies eat grass it means that their tummy hurts, It's kinda like pepto for them when they eat grass, Give him time and he will eat his dog food. Me and my kids have a new American Pit Bull and he does the same. Some advice about potty training..take him out every 30 minutes and right when he gets up from a nap, and give him treats after he goes "Potty". Just thought I would give you a lil advice.
-
McLovin! So you saw Superbad- I laughed so hard I felt like eating some grass, myself. Can you imagine Sir Charles whipping out ID that said "McLovin" if he got stopped?
Hey- that dog is cute, and I'm glad you found him after his escape. Enjoy the little guy. -
