Young McRoberts!!!!!!!

I am staying in Carmel, Indiana, which is north of Indianapolis. In this area lots of people know high school basketball. When you ask someone about it, the first name that pops in their minds is not Greg Oden, Michael Conley Jr., or Eric Gordon. It's JOSH MCROBERTS, one of my favorite people in the world. He is one of the funniest people I have met, and the one person in high school basketball that I dreaded playing, because I had to guard him and he is a monster. He uses both hands on the court. That gives him an edge on everybody else. He was here for a day so I got to hang out with him. It was one of the greatest days. Him and a couple of his friends and I laid out at his pool, played horse in the pool, stayed in too long, hands got wrinkled and when we got tired of being in the pool his mom came and grilled some hamburgers and teriyaki chicken with macaroni salad and cookies. It was the BOMB! Then we just chilled later on with some of his friends from high school and it was cool. The next day he left for Chicago to work out. He is a great player and I hope him well this year in the draft. I hope they invite him to go to the draft cause he will probaly have me laughing the whole night. I don't want to brag, but we were on one of the best AAU teams ever with 1. Michael Conley Jr, 2. Eric Gordon, 3. Deaquan Cook, 4. Josh McRoberts, and 5. little ol me. We also had Aaron Pouge, Curtis White, Mark Titus, Reese Cheatem, and Devin Williams coming off the bench. Those years were fun.

Greg, that sounds like a blast you guys had! I think McRoberts will do well in the league as long as he continues to work hard. I had the opportunity to follow that summer team you guys were on and I have to say hands down it was the best group to ever play together. I mean when its all said and done, its going to be 5 first rounders, all with lottery pick talent.

I DEF. wish Josh well... being that I'm from Nap Town. I've been watching him play ball since he was lil. My brother is in the 2005 class, so he's played against him during aau, middle school and high school since the 5th grade. My brother played for the Indy Panthers/North Central and Josh played for Carmel Puffs/Hoosier Hoops/ Carmel. Josh used to pumpfake like ten times and get an and one every time! Lol, that's funny about him being good with both hands because when he was lil he used to shoot the ball with two hands. Yea, but Good luck man!

Brandon, LaMarcus, Webster, and Outlaw all have massive potential but out all the current Blazers, the player that gets me excited the most is Sergio Rodriguez. Sergio has the best vision in terms of passing the ball. Here is hoping Sergio to Oden in a pick and roll will be as common as the combo Stockton to Malone.

Portland is buzzing and cant wait for summer league to start. You guys will rip all other teams apart! Teams in Vegas will be walking funny after you guys play them! No doubt you're going to dominate in Portland right away. Don't listen to the analysts who say you'll have an adjustment period. Undoubtedly you'll improve with experience, but the city of Portland is confident that you'll be an immediate impact. The talent that will surround you will alleviate all pressure from you. You can do NO wrong. Just go in there and play your game, have fun and DOMINATE like you can.

I have been watching the Blazers since 89, the year they lost to Detroit in the Finals. I have a feeling you mite be better than Duckworth. You should be excited and feel lucky to play with such a young and talented team. You can really make a name for yourself but more important a name for Portland. We have really had some hard years even when the Blazers were winning. The turnaround has just started and it is great you will be along for the ride. Sky is the limit for you the team and the city. Hey Greg,
First of all thank you for your time and effort to connect with the fans. I am curious what you meant when you said that Fred Jones is a cool guy. Did you hang with him while you were in town? Do you know him from somewhere else? Just wondering because I am a Duck, like Freddie, and he is one of my favorites too!
Also, if I were you, or had the cash your about to have, I would definetely look into purchasing a home in the Dunthorpe area, right outside of Lake Oswego. This is where Rasheed, and I believe Damon, lived while they were in town. It is absolutely beautiful, private, and close to the practice facility; all things I am sure are going to be important to you.
I am a lifelong Portland native so if you need to know the inside scoop about our city let me know.
I hope you know how excited the city and every fan of the team is about possibly seeing you in red and black!

Yo Greg! We love the blog here in Portland (its linked off the PTB website) and I have read every entry (long reads!) to try to get to know our newest star. Just a few words from the fan base:
1 - "Honk once for Oden, twice for Durant" is a Billboard on I-84 (the Banfield) leading into Portland from the Airport - look for it around 43rd (a little before) next time you are here
2 - I know there has got to be a lot of pressure on you with the expectations that everyone is throwing on you - be yourself because the way you are handling it right now is commendable!
3 - Even the people at Intel are talking about you non-stop in the hallways (you want a tour let me know!!! :) )
4 - Glad I kept a hold of my season tickets for the past few years lol
5 - Next year try to spend the beginning of June (around now) in Portland - you will love the atmosphere for the Rose Festival (I looked for you on the Trailblazer float in the Rose Parade w/ Dan Dickau) and if you are - Ill be on the corner of 4th and Burnside so wave when you pass by! :)
6 - Good luck!
7 - There are plenty of nice places to live in Portland - spend some time looking around and you will find some hidden gems (Lake Oswego and Dunthorpe are popular) and bigger isnt always better (ask Scottie Pippen lol). The West Moreland area is nice as well as some of the outer areas - but somewhere on the west side to be near the practice facility would be ideal (Portland traffic SUCKS and we can't drive so watch out lol).
8 - If Portland DOESN'T draft you I am becoming a Sonics Fan ;) (j/k but its tempting!)

Cant wait to see you teamed up with Lamarcus, Brandon, Jarrett and Rashard (oh ya thats right! Z-Bo for Lewis, you heard it here!) next year! Our expectations are high for this team (with you) but more importantly is the integrity that you are bringing back to our team on the character level!!

Oh and 9 - your "I want to be a Dentist" comment cracks me up! I love that you are keeping it "real" :)

Personally, I think that AAU team would beat the Blazers. Can we all keep the replies on subject with what Greg is talking about. He mentions the Trail Blazers ZERO times in his article yet around half of the replies have been about the Blazers. How would you like if you posted an article about the San Antonio Spurs and someone comes outta nowhere and starts babbling about the Bobcats? As a Naptown-resident, its good to see you come back every once in a while. I'm mad that McRoberts is leaving Duke but I know that its best for him (at least in the short term). But back to your AAU team, who was your coach and what was the name of it again. I forgot, but wasn't it like the (Spiece) Indy Heat or something like that?

Hey Greg. Next time your in P-town ask someone to get you over to Uncle Wally's BBQ down in Wilsonville. Its about 30 mins away from Portland and it has some awesome BBQ, just ask George Forman. No joke. I am pretty sure you can find someone who can direct you down there, if not, I can get them to you as well.
Portland does have quite a few great places to eat, and its very dedicated to the arts. I know your a big movie buff and there are quite a few local small venue theaters who do some goofy things. I think they recently brought back the Rocky Horror Picture Show at Midnight on Saturday nights in downtown as well. Everyone dresses up and sings along and throws things around... its a blast. Like I said, just a metter of asking around and you will be amazed with the things to do around here...

First off it's pretty crazy seeing how many people have jumped on the Blazer's fanwagon since they won the lottery, not that I won't be cheering for you or anything next year since your my local guy (I live in Fishers right around the Geist area), but I got to stay loyal to the Navy and Gold (even if they trade JO). Anyways Greg I was just curious to see if you could answer a few questions for me, and they don't have to be long answers.
1. I wanted to know if you and EJ (Eric Gordon Jr. for those who don't know) hang out at all now and what type of advice you've been giving him about college life next year? (Who knows maybe you can convince him to stay more than one year, so I can get to see him bring my hoosiers two national titles ;-).)
2. What do you think of all the renovations they've made in Carmel since your one year away at college?
3. Do you ever make it over to the Fishers area or are you mostly chillin in the Lawerence Township/Carmel area since you've gotten back?
4. Being that I am a pretty big sports buff and a pretty big memoribilia collector I was just curious to see if I could get this SLAM and ESPN mag I have of you signed somewhere while you're still in town (you could personalize them to me or w/e, but I loved to get something of you signed to display in my room before you make it big in the league). I'd even be willing to give you my Dime magazine signed by Gil Zero if you could put a signature on them for me before topps won't let you sign anything else.

It has unbelieveable huge snowcapped Mountains and legendary fly fishing lakes and rivers and a sweet little downtown area but anyway. I felt compelled to write after reading a recent ESPN article:

I can tell you I am from Ohio, I love sports and when I moved to Portland in 1999 I felt like the city had nothing to offer me on the sports front- The blazers were just starting to decline and then the whole Jailblazers saga started- the sports side of me was miserable. I did still root for the Ohio teams of course but it lacked the same feeling as when I was actually taking part in a community effort of supporting the team Portlanders seemed to not have that feeling of being great sports fan's. However all of that started to chage with last years draft. You could feel the excitement building in the city like we were on the verge of becoming something greater, something that fans could root shamelessly for. Then the draft happened and I must tell you the city is BUZZING. It is a strange thing to see people who a few years ago could have cared less now getting excited because of the possibility we will receive a certain big man in the draft. I think if you read the article I linked you will understand that this city can be a special sports city when it all comes together. Enjoy your summer and hope to see you buzzing around Portland soon. ( btw did I see you and Freddy Jones like 3 or 4 weeks ago in PDX or am I just imagining things...

Greg, Portland is drooling to have you with us. The fans are the best in the league. We look forward to having a class player and person like you playing with the Blazers. It will be the Bill Walton era all over, but even more exciting. I personally feel that the team with you in the post will make the playoffs next year and go very far. In two years an NBA Champ ring you will be wearing. Long gone are the Jail Blazers. I would like to see Portland trade Zach and Darius and get a good pick, maybe get Conley jr. :)

Greg, as a die hard Duke fan i think it's pretty cool that you were hanging out with J-Mac. First of all, i think you're going to be a hall-of-fame center when it's all said and done because of your skills. You're like a more athletic Tim Duncan who'll be able to dominate the paint and score inside at will with both power and finesse. I know you'll have a great career in Portland. With regards to Josh, I'm happy that he's taking the next step in his basketball career and I hope he'll get drafted early. I just wish he would have stayed at Duke because i wanted to root for him as the best player on my favorite sports team. I think that if he would have stayed he would have been the most versatile big man in the country next year and definite top-5 pick in the next draft because he's such a dangerous mismatch. Anyway I wish you both luck in your careers and Greg, your gonna change the game.

Hey Greg, not a huge fan of anyone who goes to Duke, because much of Coach K's success came not by having the best players (North Carolina), but by having the best players that stayed four years. There was one year where Stackhouse, Wallace, Jamison and Carter would have all been on the same team... scary. That said, I'm sure Josh is a good dude, and I dated a girl from Carmel when I was at Purdue, they're very friendly ;).
Mostly, I just wanted to say well written, and to wish you the best. I have a lot of NBA content on my site joehoo.net, and I post a lot at hoopshype... but I plan on writing an article in my sports takes section about how I feel that you are going to terrorize the league. In 1990, when you had Hakeem, Ewing, The Admiral, Moses, Parrish, etc... all playing good basketball, you'd have only been good-very good as a rookie. Now? The league is just too weak at the center position. Duncan is not as physical as any of those players, Howard, while very good today is not nearly as good as Olajuwon or even Ewing as a center... other top centers nowadays include one-dimensional players like Curry, Chandler, etc. And Ming? The creation of Stern in a desperate effort to tap into China's market cannot put up with you... he's too deliberate and slow.
I really think if you work hard, you can be the Magic, Jordan, Shaq, or Duncan of your subera... that singularly dominant talent.
But ENJOY days like your day with Sean. Tony Romo was my best friend's roommate in college, and I saw how much his life changed just this past season. Soon your commitments on a daily basis will be staggering. Keep your head, try to put yourself in situations like that where you can be just like everyone else, and don't get lost in that world that is set up so that wealthy elites can suck your name for every dollar it's worth. Good luck man, I'm pulling for you.

Hey Greg... just wanted to say I've had fun watching you play this past year and following what they show on television. Makes it fun to see an Indiana guy, my age, having the ultimate success. But beyond that you also have put away the stereo-types to the big shot basketball player. Greg, it's cool to hear, as a former Dukie, that you're on good terms with McRoberts and that he's a good guy. Unfortunately though, his Duke career was quite a disappointment and he really did very little to help the program during his two years there. And, for his career, he would have been better leaving after his freshmen year prior to exposing some of the shortcomings of his game that were clearly evident this year.
All the same, best of luck to both of you in the draft and beyond.

Yeah, Josh was a disappointment. Losing 2 first team AA's and having ZERO inside help and NO point guard had nothing to do with Duke's season. Have a clue and read a book on basketball before making a fool of yourself. McRoberts was in a no-win situation. He is supremely talented, just not a prolific scorer. If Oden dreaded playing him does that tell you anything?

WELL NOW! i'm glad you had fun hanging out with whats his name from that school 10 minutes down from ''APPLE CHILL,NC''! lol! NAH I'M BUGGING! Josh was the best player on that team and he'll have a decent career at the ''NEXT LEVEL''. WE definitely had fun beating him and jj reject while he was there ESPECIALLY ON SENIOR NIGHT OF ALL NIGHTS! LOL! ANY WAY! before i'm a hater i'm still a student and a teacher of this game. even at my age. which is considered ancient on most regards. Much luck to you BIG MAN!

Good Luck in the NBA, you seem like such a thoughtful and intelligent person I hope you have great success. As a Duke fan I am thrilled to read your comments on Josh McRoberts. I have been lucky to see him here in Durham the last two years and I think he will be an allstar in the NBA. Here are some highlights I made of Josh last year taken from 5 games.

Hi Greg,
If you are concerned at all about the weather in Portland, let me put your mind at ease. I lived in Indianapolis in the early 1990s and I live in Portland today. The weather in Portland is much better than Indiana. It isn't as cold in the winter and the summers are sunny with hardly any humidity.
The amount of rainfall in the Portland area is about 37-40 inches per year â€" the same as most US east coast cities. Whereas it can rain 2-3 inches in a hour or two in Washington, DC, or many mid-western areas, it will take days to accumulate 2-3 inches in Portland. There are a lot of gray and drizzly days during the winter months in Portland.
We have four months of very rainy weather, four months of 50-50 rainy days, and four months of very dry weather.
During the months of July through September, Oregon ranks as the 5th driest state in the nation.
Bottom line is thisâ€¦ Our summer weather is perfect. The city is fabulous. You are only a short drive from the mountains or the ocean. This city loves the Blazers and can't wait for you to bring Blazermania back to Portland. See you soon.

sign him up! Just watched the highlights somebody sent in!! He looks great running the floor, nice body control, can handle it, can get up, and has great court vision too. Nice nice player this Josh McRoberts. A big bonus you two having court experience together, he's going to really help the cause! Let's get started! This is what I've patiently waited for. I've been goin' to the games since the original team (Petri,Adelman,Barnett) have split season tickets (since '77) with a friend I used to play ball with. I'm a little antsy for you guys to get on with it. He's an absolute steal for our team! Can't believe our luck, we got it goin' on now!

Been a Blazer fan since the start of the team back in the days of Geoff Petrie, Larry Steele, Sidney Wicks, etc.; past season ticket holder and former employee of the Portland Trailblazers during 2004 to 2005 season when we drafted Sebastian Telfair with 13th pick of the draft.
It is amazing how this team has evolved from the time I was employed by the Trailblazers to now. It is great to have both you and Josh McRoberts on our team now. What you experienced last Friday (6/29/07) hasn't been seen in PDX TOWN since the Blazers won the NBA Championship with Bill Walton in the 1976-1977 season.

Its about time that someone agrees with me about what I see in josh mcroberts....all he has been is ridiculued and hated on because nobody has watched enough duke games closely enough to see what i see in him....yes I believe his talent is still fairly raw by NBA standards, but he has all the tools of a great small to power forward, a little more size and some fundamental defense and he is gonna be a starter easily in this league of giant gods. Thank you for strenthening my opinion on this matter. Bluedevils till my heart gives out.
