Senator Obama is getting my vote
Today I got a phone call from Senator Barack Obama. I was so nervous two days ago when I knew it was gonna happen and wanted to make sure he knew I had done my homework on him. I have a lot of respect for him and already had a really good feeling about him. As the time got closer, I got on his website, learned more about what he is about and brushed up on what I knew, so I got more comfortable with the idea of speaking to him one on one. The conversation was quick - like two minutes but I got to talk to him like a real person. What I got from talking to him is that he is a real sports fan and he knew about the Blazers. He said that when I come back Brandon, LaMarcus and I will be a force next year. He also asked me about my knee, and he said he wasn't feeling my mohawk - lol. I laughed and explained to him that it's just a haircut to me and he told me he liked how I handle myself as a young man - "Thanks Mom." I did not talk politics with him. He talks about that stuff all the time and I'm going to keep learning more about the issues. He is a very nice man and I am a big fan. I got the chance to go to his website (www.barackobama.com) and read up on some of his beliefs and there are things he is doing that I really support like his plan with education, civil rights, and health care. That's why Senator Obama is getting my vote. I know people might question my support of education because I left school after my first year but I had an opportunity to become something not a lot of people can be - on a paid vacation. No, I'm just playing - a number one draft pick. Yes I do plan on going back to school and getting my degree. I'm actually going back this summer for sure. Everything I look at I look at the stand point from my little cousins or my family members outside my immediate family. Everything that I'm sure my mother looked into before she voted, when me and my brother were growing up, and before I got drafted. Senator Obama is a real person. Sometimes people forget that people in the public eye are real people also. I know I did with him at first. We are all citizens of this great country and I know I'm putting in my one vote. I know it's just one small vote, but it's big to me. If the person I vote for wins it's gonna be because of my one little vote, at least that's what I'm gonna think. I think everyone should think that way. This will be my first presidential election to participate in as a voter and I hope that you younger voters will get involved. I think that our votes can really influence the outcome so go out, register and vote for who you think is the best candidate to be the best leader for this country and make sure you and your family will feel good about the new president that is elected in November.

It's also admirable that you've taken the time to do a little reading on him. Very cool.
I think it's important to also look at opposing view points. People have learned to be very slick over the years, and it's good to read between the lines. This is true of what's reported to, some of it is a flat out twisting of the truth and it's always good to ask "why" and "but what do those numbers really mean and where did they come from and why do i care?"
Here's hoping you're 100 and 10 next year. I hope to see you at summer league. You were out the last weekend I was down there. Hopefully that doesn't happen again!

It's nice to hear someone at your age having some awareness about the importance of voting. I served in the military as a helicopter crew chief for 5 years in the late 90's and I never voted during that time. I didn't vote because I honestly didn't understand the importance of participating in such an event. There are so many things I don't like about our electoral process that I didn't believe any one person really mattered. Later in life, at the age of 27-during the 2004 election, I finally realized that voting is not just about keeping your opinions to yourself and casting your vote; voting is about communicating with other citizens societal issues and gathering information to identify the best solution to work on our problems. It is nice to see someone like you simply stating things matter-of-factly, and not blindly endorsing a candidate. You have not been in anyone's face about the election, yet you have stated your opinion and backed-up why you have that opinion. I am also a Barack Obama supporter for many reasons. First of all, he is a fresh face that hasn't changed his story a thousand times. Secondly, Sen. Obama has a fresh perspective on the key issues facing the U.S., and he also shows awareness to what is happening in the middle-class of our great country. Sen. Obama also wants to change the way our country is percieved by communicating with other nations-he doesn't want to be a cowboy and ignore what's best citizens of all nations. I like Obama because other nations may be willing to overlook the past 8 years because of his heritage. I know it is a hot topic today, but the U.S. has only elected old white dudes as presidents-yet we (historically) claim to be one of the most open-minded nations in the history of civilization (yeah, I am a white suburbanite from Salem, OR, but why should that matter-like you said on the Jim Rome show it's important not to look at electing qualified public officials based on ethnicity, but what's right!). Electing a person of color would also present the opprotunity for many Americans not keen on diversity to actually recognize the importance of our entire national community. No matter what color, gender, or religion you are, any person can successfully lead this great nation-now, in our time of uncertainty, a person can not only make the whole globe aware that the people of the U.S. want to see change, but our fellow citizens untrusting of such a drastic change will be able to recognize that it is truely the content on one's character that dictates the person, not the color of their skin. Best of luck with your rehab, and you have helped restore Blazermania simply by being a good person. Thank you for your time!

About Nancy Pelosi article:
What true American would do this to the working Americans here in America? Isn't this our country? Aren't we supposed to prepare ourselves to retire with incomes that keep us off the '''''''''''''welfare rolls and give us the opportunity to care for ourselves'"""""""""""" as we grow older?
This woman is a nut case! You aren't going to believe this.
Madam Speaker Nancy Pelosi wants to put a Windfall Tax on all stock market profits (including retirement funds, 401K's and Mutual Funds! Alas, it is true - all to help the 12 Million Illegal Immigrants and other unemployed Minorities!
Boy, are we in trouble... This woman is frightening. She says, " We need to work toward the goal of equalizing income in our country and at the same time limiting the amount the rich can invest."
When asked how these new tax dollars would be spent, she replied : "We need to raise the standard of living of our poor, unemployed and minorities. For example, we have an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in our country who need our help along with millions of unemployed minorities. Stock market windfall profit taxes could go a long ways to guarantee these people the standard of living they would like to have as 'Americans'."
Obama will be all over this as your President. I guess if you are unemployed or illegally in the country, you'll love it. Good luck.

Obama: "We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek."
It's funny how Obama supporters are seen as love-struck youngsters who are so enthralled with a good-looking talker (and, some of them are). But most of his supporters realize his greatest strength is getting people to believe - in the system, themselves, this country.
He does have experience, and his political philosophy is actually a classic liberal one (which isn't the same, no matter how much you wish it were, as a socialist). But for all the 'messianic' sweeps of changes that seem to project from his campaign, he has been an incrementalist in terms of getting things done. A pragmatist, one could say.
That's important because you'll need 60 votes to get things done, and the bully pulpit is an incredible tool to get that.

Falling for the fast talker
Re: "I'm crossing over – I'm a Republican, and I'm voting for Obama, says Christine Allison," Saturday Viewpoints.
Ms. Allison is jumping the Republican ship and crossing over to cast her vote for Barack Obama. Ms. Allison is not the first, nor will she be the last, gullible woman to fall for some fast-talking guy's hollow promises.
Mr. Obama is an inexperienced, unproven entity who has yet to accomplish anything of importance. He rants about the problems of Washington, of which he is a part. His main talent appears to be his ability to talk on and on about change, hope and what this country needs. This seems to hypnotize his followers to the point that some swoon. He is short on plans and solutions and long on hope.
We can be assured that if he is elected, he will appoint the most liberal judges to our courts that he can find. This wonderful republic will be doomed to become a socialistic society. We should not wish this on our children or grandchildren.

Being that I am a native of Jamaica, West Indies, I will address the situation there first. Black Nationalism, in terms of Jamaica, is the same as it should be implemented in every black community. It is common sense governing for the common good. It is educating the masses on the reality of their situation and the reality of the hardships ahead. Informing them in a clear, understandable language, about the hard decisions that must be undertaken for maintaining long term stability. Stability in civilized, free, and equal societies is the ultimate goal of Black Nationalists. The only way to accomplish stability is to abandon any laws, traditions, or practices that do not adhere to the overall common good. Greed is colonization. It is anti-stability, anti-civilization, and anti-non WASP.
Greed is a natural human feeling/emotion. Sometimes greed is good. But when it is used as the doctrine to dictate policy, it is criminal. I will call it "uncivil" greed. It impairs better judgement and is highly contagious when allowed to flourish unchecked. The end result is always the same, the rich get richer, the middle class is wiped out, and the country/community collapses in on itself. Mass killings and mass disenfranchisement of African people or poor people of the world. It is modern day colonialism. A few parasites gorging off the masses. Is this not criminal? This is why the Black Nation world wide is still in turmoil.
All lands in Africa and the Caribbean, acquired through WASP colonization should be immediately vacated by European interests and dispersed to the indigenous people.
South Africa will not stabilize until Wasps are vacated from ownership that was acquired through colonization. The civil societies we will create, will be open to any race of human being, but in a free, fair, and equal way. These civilized societies will be "safe zones" as opposed to the war zones, that most of the world's Africans find themselves in today. Citizen's will be required to conduct themselves civilly and live agreeable to cooperatively disagree. We are at a time in history when true "change" is achievable. Where countries/communities will be established that are safe, free, fair and equal. Populations will be governed by "golden rule" politics. "Treat others as you would like to be treated". An established secular-government, that governs objectively, will achieve this Black Utopia. This Black Nation is to be operated under one constitution, that endorses a free market, but has safe guards against it's corruption. A unified civil society that recognizes all human beings, regardless of race, gender, religion as equal under the law and freedoms applied.
A Black Utopia in which every member of the population, will be provided and required to receive a free education up to high school. Students will be taught the importance of hard work, discipline, and civility. The education curriculum will be based on facts and not influenced by bias. Self Defense, world religions, economics, world history, sex education, drug addiction, common law, etc. will also be in the curriculum. Members of the student population that show the most promise, must be groomed to pursue careers in medicine, agriculture, law(corporate/criminal), information technology, engineering, alternative energy, and business. These students are our greatest resource. They are to be treated accordingly. Trades relevant to today's and near future technologies, should be taught to the remaining populous. Education is empowering and black people must be empowered in order to have "honest" incentive to agreeably cooperate. This will ensure Black Nationalism and civil society for generations to come.
We welcome business. Black Nationalists are not against business, we are against "blood money" economics. What I mean by that is simply, profiting from parasitic practices utilized against the masses. If a dictator engaged in these practices, he would be viewed as a tyrant. Why are Corporations and their owners, who engage in those same practices, honored. They are like the "Italian Mafia". They bribe politicians openly, in ways masked as legal. The politicians are then indebted to these "Parasites", so they in turn dictate policy in favor of the "robber barons" who put them there. These policies are always promoted as good for the country/community but in reality are just policies that bleed our resources and put the population in poverty. This will ensure the
Congressman, Ron Paul, a Republican in the United States Congress makes a compelling argument for "hard" money. A return to gold backed currency. He says, instead of giving a privileged few, the power to come up with new ways, to take money out of working people's pockets, gold provides stability. The Central Bank fiat money system is too easily manipulated. This manipulation is what causes the swings in volatility. This volatility is where parasites' greed overwhelms the masses. I affirm that the gold backed currency is the only economy that will provide long term economic stability for the masses. Adopting the gold backed standard is vital to the success of establishing free, fair, equal and open societies.
Establishing civil societies throughout the world will be an overwhelming undertaking. But it is necessary. The human race will not reach its full potential through parasitic relationships. Establishing a worldwide symbiotic economic relationship is a true free market. Though it is common sense, resistance will be at times unbearable. Allies of this fight are encouraged to be prepared for the good and bad aspects of this mission. We are receptive to all races that are sympathetic to the cause of establishing Civil Societies worldwide. We are appealing to wealthy Africans around the globe to donate to this cause and for those who do not that the masses recognize them as puppets of the "greed driven" parasites. Far too long have we allowed these rich blacks to forget our struggles when they acquire wealth, but when they get in trouble, they remember where their true support comes from. The same masses they ignored.
To establish civil societies in every black country/community is the moral obligation of every able anti-WASP extremist. We must create, maintain, and grow a fund purely for this purpose. Something like the United Negro College Fund. How about the United African Well Being Fund. I am calling on every black man, woman, and child to lobby every government official, business owner, community leader to support this mission.
Thank You for taking the time to read my correspondence.

So your claims of a Terrorist Doomsday scenario are wholly unrealistic, and suggesting we wage wars abroad to prevent attacks at home is simply retarded.

Way to have your own mind. As a middle school history teacher, I wanted my students to think for themselves - not to be a clone of me. I have made my "educated" choices and I expected my students to make their "educated choices." Debate is good and will result in choices being made. I believe the best compliment that any former student could give me would be to say "he made me think." I know that you had a special teacher)s) that allowed you to become the special man you are.

"Republicans buy Nikes too" is a great philosophy - if all you care about is money. In my opinion, the culture of not discussing politics is one of the reason we are where we are today. I would look forward to someone like you becoming politically informed and expressing his opinions. If I may, a blog recommendation:

In this day and age you can't find out what's really going on from the mainstream media.

It reminds me a lot about the AIDS epidemic, and how politicians did not even care about what was happening, would not help the sick infected people, because it didn't affect them...UNTIL someone powerful and rich contracted the disease..then they were listening. What if this recession hits hard? Even the rich will suffer then, and maybe THEN they will take notice.

My wife and I are both blind and we both have college degrees.
I graduated 9 years ago and I had one job briefly that I could have gotten without going to college at all.
I've been looking for work ever sense.
I would have done what you did.
When you're the 1 pick you can't leave that on the table.
Plus, you can always get a degree later if you want and you're a very smart guy anyway.
As a former resident of portland for 4 years, big time props to you and you're teammates for really putting positivity back in Blazers basketball.
Praying you're rehab is going well and you get to play a pain free season next year.
God bless
Ryan

+ we aren't at war. You don't fight wars against terrorism, you fight wars against armies that represent nations. We are battling ideology and insurgence. We are battling, according to the Iraqi constitution, criminals. We are using our army to do that but we are not fighting a war.
Hussein is a semitic name. So is his first name. They are biblical words just like John and Sarah. Saying that this name thing is important is a child's argument and a distraction tactic.
