UNLV was heavily favored and undefeated all year. It was a win that put the Duke program and really helped put them on the map as national title contenders for years to come.

The fact is that, talent-wise, 'Nova was so inferior to Georgetown that they should have been run out of the building by the Hoyas. But by the grace of God they shot better than 75 percent from the field and 90 percent in the second half, and still only won by two points. Here was a team playing better than they could ever have imagined in their wildest dreams and they were only able to win by two. That tells you how much of a mismatch Georgetown was for them.

NC is such a powerhouse that they were easily the favorite, but Weber came out with a drive that got them a big lead early. The real reason I like this game though is NC fought back showing their teams abilities, only to fall short to the late game poise of Weber State, sealing the win by a mere 2 points. A very entertaining game and undoubtedly an upset. Weber 76, UNC 74

You would be foolish to not pick Chaminade over Virginia as the biggest upset of all-time. I was going to pick this game, but it looks like AndyKeller beat me to it. Ralph Sampson, who some called the next Greg Oden, was held to 12 points by a group of high school scrubs. This would be the equivalent of you being shut down by Danny Peters. I rest my case.

Speaking of this area, one of your old high school teammates, Tyler Morris, is at BU and was expected to be a major contributor to the Terriers this season along with Corey Lowe from my hometown (Newton, Mass.), but he has been out injured with foot issues. They call it a "stress reaction." Anyway, the team has struggled in his absence, and those close to BU basketball hope that he will return soon and deliver on the promise of the preseason by winning America East. I would like to know if you have spoken with Tyler Morris about his rehabbing efforts and his general activities at BU.
Finally, if you have a break during your rehab stints, you are more than welcome to come here and see a game in which he plays (hopefully) at Agganis Arena or Case Gym/The Roof. Agganis is a much nicer facility, but they only have one more game there this year, January 25 against Vermont.
I wish you the best of luck in getting back into top shape, although I am disappointed that you did not stay in state and go to my alma mater, Purdue. If you were part of a Twin Towers tandem with Carl Landry, they would have been unstoppable, and if you stayed this year and played with E'twaun Moore, Robbie Hummel, Scott Martin, and JaJuan Johnson, they would have definitely been a force to be reckoned with. Of course, we can't forget about Chris Kramer, can we? ;-) Well, anyway, a man can dream. :-D You did what you felt was best for you, it worked out, and I hope it continues to work out.

2. Notre Dame over Walton and UCLA, ending longest win streak ever, 88 straight if I recall.
3. NC State over Walton and UCLA, ending string of I believe 7 straight NCAA titles, maybe 8, during the run of 10 titles in 12 years.
4. George Mason over UConn.
And Texas Western over Kentucky was only an upset because the country and especially Adolph and the still 100% segregated south still didn't have a clue... (btw did you know that Chris Collinsworth the football announcer, was on the first integrated team in UFlorida history, the last major college in the country to finally screw up their courage and defy their stadium full of angry Stars and Bars wavers and integrate with a single black player, this in 1978, less than thirty years ago, a full 10 years after even Kentucky's Baron Adolph?)

Come one Greg, Florida was favored to win over Ohio State. That wasn't an upset. You were obviously the best player in that game but they had the better team. It came down to shooting, they hit their big shots, especially the 3 pters, and OSU was cold.

You've got to be with me on this one! 2005 Undefeated 29-0 Illinois Fighting Illini comes into Value City Arena to face the 18-11 Ohio State Buckeyes. Ohio State trailed the entire game expect with 5.1 seconds to go Matt "Sly" Slyvester comes off a screen and drills a 3 pointer off the back of the rim to put the Buckeyes up 65-64. The call by Gus Johnson is absolutely timeless! "They need a 2 to tie it a 3 to win, Sylvester for 3...... OHHH! OHHH! With 5.1 to go timeout Illinois! Unbelievable!" And from Bill Raferty, "..He pops out, NYLON! Some Onions for Matt Sylvester!" Thad was like 8 feet off the ground, I've never seen a coach jump so high in my life. One of the best games I've ever seen in any sport!

So I'm going to have to go with Villanova pimp-slapping Ewing and the Hoyas for the 1985 NCAA Championship, (I never liked Georgetown, & thought Ewing was a little over-rated) He certainly didn't poscess the heart that you showed in the Tourney last March.
(Side-Note:) My FAVORITE UPSET of all time (any sport) the year? 1980, the place? Lake Placid NY, the sport? Hockey, the event? Olympic medal round, Do you believe in miracle's, Yes I'm talking about that group of college student from the US that seized the moment and became the miracle on ice, dethrowning the Soviets whom hadn't lost a game in the Olympics since 1968 I believe something like 29 straight victories. The Soviets were Great but the US squad was better on that day.

Villanova also played Georgetown in the National Championship. A #8 seed, the Vegas line had Villanova as a 10 point underdog. In the previous 5 games of the tourney, Georgetown, anchored by Patrick Ewing, held their opponents to an abysmal 39% field goal shooting. But apparently no one told Villanova. They came in and shot a lights out 79% during the game, including a ridiculous 90% in the 2nd half, winning 66-64.
This is not a joke.
If you have not seen this game, stop what you are doing and find it (they play it on ESPN classic a lot). This game is one of my all-time favorite because no one expects this low ranked Villanova team to do anything, then they flip the country the bird as they exercise a nearly perfect offense. . .for an entire game. . .in the national championship.

If there ever was a dominant team in college basketball, it had to be Houston. "Phi Slamma Jamma" gang had Akeem Olajuwon, Clyde Drexler, and Michael Young. The Houston Cougars were ranked #1 for most of the 82-83 season. They played a style of basketball that was playground-influenced brand of basketball. Many of the basketball purists like John Wooden disliked the flamboyant style of Houston. Coach Guy Lewis loved the style and encouraged his players to dunk the basketball. Lewis was influenced by the ABA and players like Julius Erving. Athleticism was their advantage and lead to a lot of fast breaks, but sometimes trumped fundamental skills preached by some coaches. Jim Valvano was a coached that preached fundamentals, but he liked his kids to have fun playing the game as well.
When the 1983 NCAA tournament began, NC State was a #6 seed and the powerful Houston was a #1 seed. NC State knocked off Pepperdine, Virginia, and Georgia in close games. Houston had a pretty easy time with their bracket, winning mostly by double-digits.
When it was time for NC State and Houston to meet in the tournament championship game, the Cougars were cocky. Olajuwon predicted that the team with the most dunks will win the game.
NC State led by a small margin at halftime of the championship game. After halftime, Houston played well in the second half with a 17-2 run, but NC State tied the game with two minutes left. Dereck Whittenburg had been hot in the second half. He had to sink two straight to tie the game. NC State held the ball for the last shot, but the play didn't go as planned and Whittenburg had to shoot a 30-foot jump shot. Lorenzo Charles, seeing that the shot was going to be short, jumped up, grabbed it, and slammed it as time expired. This shot led to the famous shot of Coach Valvano running around on the court looking for someone to hug.
Olajuwon learned a lesson that night. He who dunks last, laughs best.

With a talented young team featuring Khalid Reeves, Chris Mills and Damon Stoudamire the Wildcats came into the tournament with a 24-3 record, only to lose in the first round to the 19-11 champions of the West Coast Conference. The Santa Clara Broncos rode the free throw shooting of a freshman canadian kid by the name of Steve Nash. Damon had multiple chances to tie the game late, but couldn't get a 3 to drop.
