My New Family Member
His name is Charles Barkley McLovin and he is my new dog. He is a Boston/Beagle. He is not too big because i cant have a big dog while im renting my house. He is very quiet, hasnt even barked since i had him so far. He does of course pee in the house, making me mad. I know it takes time to train a dog, but don't you wish that a dog can just be born knowing to go to the restroom outside and to eat his food out of the dish? This dog is stressing me out some because he sniffs everything and he loves eating grass, but he won't eat his dog food. The second day i had him Brandon and I left him in the backyard for like 30 minutes and when we got back he had crawled under the gate and run away. Luckily, i have great neighbors. It was funny because when i was down the street i told one of my neighbors and she said she hadn't seen him, but by the time i got to my house and got out the car i saw another lady walk out the door saying "about 30 to 45 minutes ago and he has a red collar." i looked at Brandon and said "she talking about me" lol. They all were looking for him, even their kids were on bikes. He turned up two houses down and i was so happy. Now i watch him every time he goes outside. I love him already. All he does is cuddle and sleep and he is quiet. I just wish he would stop eating grass.

Now let me tell you the best way to get Pee out of the carpet:
Get a towel and soak up all pee
get boiling hot water & add some vinegar to the water
pour on the spot and then take another towel & soak that up, (step on the towels)
place a clean towel over the wet spot until dry
Now ask Brandon to use the Bathroom from now on! hahahaha!
Actually works, remember my Afghan Angel, we had a few problems with her!

Best of luck.

Its normal.
Wolves and coyotes eat grass and plants also in the wild.
I looked it up on the web just to make sure.
But your not supposed to let your dog use any salad dressing.
So keep that toward the back of the fridge.
I have also heard that some high class dogs like croutons and parmesan cheese.
Greg...
I am sooooo glad your a blazer!!!
Love your dog!
PS...attached is a pic of one of my dogs.
Name is Canyon
She eats anything...not just grass.

Now, to teach your dog not to pee in the house. First you get a little kid gate and you pin Barkley into one room of the house. Next, you cover the floor with newspaper. Where ever the dog doesn't go to the bathroom, remove those pieces of newspaper. Finally when it is down to 1 or 2 pieces of newspaper, start moving them slowly towards the door and eventually outside, and eventually take them away...that's what my parents did with our puppy about 3 years ago. It worked well.
Good luck to ya man.

Dogs are great medicine, and the best therapy around. I hope your dog brings you years of enjoyment. We have a Boston named Clyde. We got him when Clyde Drexler was in Portland retiring his jersey. He is such a blessing as well as a big responsibilty. Barkley is a cute name, but if he lives up to his namesake, you may have your hands full :)
Still praying for you!

Here's my two or three unsolicited cents on the dog. Crate train him, he will not pee in his crate and it's a safe place for him to hang out, especially when you're not home. Take him outside several times using commands like 'let's go potty' and 'hurry up' and if he goes, reward with a lot of praise. My lab still eats grass... that's normal, especially when they have a stomach ache. Pick a food and stick with it... changing their food makes their stomach hurt. Lastly, everything is about exercise... especially with a young pup. Watch the Dog Whisperer or get one of his books, Cesar Milan.. very informative...but it's exercise, discipline then affection... being the pack leader... blah, blah, blah.
I can't believe I'm sitting here writing you dog lessons I've learned!!! HA! Congrat's on your new pup... hope you find it as rewarding as I do! ENjOY~

phillydog said September 25, 2007
The key is to say your command once and make them do it. If you keep repeating yourself, sit, sit sit, sit,,,the dogs will get to a point where they think,,,I'll sit on the fourth "sit" and it will be OK. Its not..make them sit on the first one..If they don't sit on the first command physically make them sit and hold the position,,then give them alot of affection and/ or treat. Don't treat them every time. Kepp them guessing!
Also,,ask the Blazers to give you video of Arvidas Sabonis. He was a master big man,,his passing was incredible. I'm sure in your recovery-time your looking for stuff to do besides dog training.
Good Luck!

You can "house break" your dog pretty easily. The crating method teaches the dog to hold their systems, because they wont go to the bathroom where they sleep. If your home you can keep the dog in a crate, for a few hours at a time. If he sleeps alot he probably wont mind. Also good to do if you are out of the house rehabbing. Then, as soon as you get home take the dog out of the crate and out of the house for bathroom time. Within a month you should be able to get rid of the crate. Also, don't leave him in there for more that six or seven hours.
As far as food, feed him at the same time everyday. and don't overfeed him, he'll get bored with his food. Those dried liver snacks will get his mind off the grass.
Best of luck with the knee.
Andy

Glad to see you have a new dog. I hope you are feeling better. We are behind you big man. In the case of th dog eating grass, don't worry they all do that. They eat grass for their stomachs. It is not unusual for them to eat grass. I raise dogs and they will eat grass especially when they might not feel too good. You may need to take him to a Vet.
Good Luck GO and God Bless You..

Beagles rule! You have to start training him right away and keep him on a leash or in an enclosed area. Even when they get older, if they catch a scent, they've been known to run away.

Cute dog, I got a dog about a year ago when my kitty died. Her name is Cleo. She is so much fun to have. She is 3 years old and still eats grass all the time so that is something you'll just have to learn to accept. But the potty traing will get better is your real persistent, Thanks for caring about your fans. Portland is a great town and we will be behind you 100%.

Heard parts of the press conference today. Glad all is well (as can be right now) and spirits are high. I know you sincerely appreciate your fan support so I wanted to give a shout out to you and the rest of the blazer crew. We're looking forward to some Roy to Aldrige highlight reals.....and who knows in the future. Make sure Webster and Outlaw move around alot to help fill your presence on the court. Lamarcus is going to have a big year I can feel it.
Keep up the hard work. We all appreciate your efforts and can't wait to see them pay off.

Good looking dog. If you are ever in a local pet store, they are even selling little 2"x2" patches of "Dog Safe" grass now - couldn't believe it when I saw it.
Here is a picture of a dog we have at our local rescue (www.gcapa.org). If Barkley ever needs a friend, his name is Kendall and he needs a home too :)
