My New Contest
Im sorry its been a while. I know everyone wants to know whats goin on with me. We got into Kansas City tonight. We play the Hawks tomorrow. Ive been feeling really good, the knee feels great. Preseasons been a good learning experience and now Im just really excited for the season to start. So remember when I did that contest for 2K8 last year? Im going to be doing another contest and its the same idea but a little different. This year 2K9 is doing a fantasy league called The Other Season. Its different than most fantasy leagues because there are 8 players in the NBA that are going to be the team owners (including me). You can go online, www.theotherseason.com, and be drafted onto one of our teams and play for us. 2K is giving the winning team $10k to donate to their charity of choice so it would be really cool to have the opportunity to give this to Oregon Mentors. So my team better win! For the chance to play on my team Ill be posting a picture on here once a week for a couple weeks and you are going to come up with the best caption. The 5 people I pick with the best captions will win a game and the chance to play on my fantasy team, good? Heres the first one..keep it G rated.

I don't know if you can or would be interested but I'd like to invite you to come visit us!! I'll give you a tour of the impressive 50.5-acre campus covering about 633,075 square feet. The only thing you can do is adjust to this as an element of reality, like rain, or gravity, or headaches. It just happens.
You can't control what they say in the papers, but you can control how you respond to it. It can only bother you if you allow it to. Who cares if you mess up? Who cares if you average 5 and 5 and cost us a win by turning the ball over or missing free-throws? This season is not the season that defines your career, that season will hopefully come soon, but not this year. This season is about restitution, getting back to where you would have been. This season is about growth, getting experience, and maybe even tasting the playoffs. However, this season is also about self-discovery. How will you choose to face the adversity thrown your way? How will you respond? Remember, 10 years from now, no one will remember rustyness or missed free throws. Just Hoop Greg. Have fun, because I'll be having fun watching you play.~Nathan
roysblazers replied October 20, 2008
rickdawg replied October 22, 2008
Nathan is saying what all of us up here in Portland and the Northwest were thinking: don't let what a windbag like Jason Quick says bother you. Do not let expectations or evaluations of the Media get you down, they exaggerate everything and expect only greatness all the time. The true fans who follow the Blazers though, honestly we don't expect the World out of you Greg. We know it has been a full year since you have played ball or really exerted yourself. Do not think that everyone expects you to get 20 and 10 every night. Hell I wouldn't care if you got 5 and 5 every night, or 0 and 2 every night. Really what I would consider a successful season is if you guys improve your win total by one, and you are able to stay fairly healthy (everyone gets a cold in Oregon at least once a year so i say fairly).
It's not just your ablities we like though Big Man, it's you. We like Greg Oden. We like your charisma, your polite and humble attitude, and most of all we like the fact that you are still just a young man. Your outlook on certain things, like when people were giving you crap about your singing, that's what we like. The fact you do not care what media thinks because you feel what you are doing is right (and while your singing might not have been right :) your intentions were pure hearted). The fact that you do not care what people think when you say you're endorsing Barack Obama, that is what we like about you.
While Jason Quick might not be impressed or "underwhelmed" by your performances, I have actually been excessively impressed by your performances, seriously. Take a look at any other player who has missed a full year of basketball and they are nowhere near where you are already. Take Amare for instance, it almost took him two full years before he was looking semi good again. Honestly it is just good to see you healthy and in a Blazers uniform.
Here's the thing Greg: the pressure is not only on you and you don't have to make it be. I understand that you take this very seriously and you feel like you have the weight of the world on your shoulders, but it isn't. You are surrounded by plenty of talented players and have an excellent coaching staff to rely on. While you might garner more attention than some of your teammates (because you were a #1 overall pick) you do not have to take on more burdens than any one of them. This is a team, no scratch that, this is a family. You are part of the Blazer/Portland family and if you need anything we're here for you. Do not let a couple of people's expectations or comments effect you. What matters is that you feel like you are doing everything you can to help this team win. If you can say that at the end of the day, we will love you forever here. Not to mention, this is Portland man. Drexler, Porter, Kersey, Williams, and Duckworth never brought us a title but most of us still consider them the greats and always give them standing ovations when they're in the Garden. You know why? It's because they endeared themselves to this town. They made us believe in something that is good and right. That's what we see in you Greg. We do not see "the greatest center ever" (no offense), but what we do see is a young man that seemed to love the game so much when he first showed up here. All we want is the Greg Oden that endeared himself so quickly to Portland; the Greg Oden that 6000 people were excited to see and come out for even in the rain, the Greg Oden that laughed and made jokes and all of us could relate with (I just saw Superbad for the first time last week, genius!).
Seriously Greg, keep being yourself. Do not let what other people think effect you (unless it's your mom because everyone needs their mom's approval). But other than her, do not let us fans, the media, or anyone set your goals or expectations for you. It's your life man, have fun with it, because this time will not last forever. Just go out there and do what you feel is right. If it results in 20 points and 10 rebounds, cool, but if it results in 0 points and 3 rebounds that's cool too. What matters is you're playing your game, not the game the fans or media expect you to play. Good luck this season and hopefully for many to come (as long as you're in a Blazers uniform).

Anyway I read a story posted on ball dont lie about how you were feeling pressure. I guess a reporter told you that he was "underwhelmed" dude dont worry about it.
I know you've probably got a million people telling you the same thing, a million people watching everything you do, a million people asking about your knee, and all that is got to suck. Alot. But dude you've got to go out and get yours. This pressure is always going to be there, it will lessen because well "the next Jordan" (or some other hyped player) will be around soon enough and you'll go back to that really really good big in Portland, that has an awesome blog.
I think you've played good. You can (and will) improve. I'm not going to give you advice because 1. I'm a fat white guy that can barely dribble with my left, 2. even MJ in has day had something he could have improved on, and 3. Everybody in the world is telling you waht to do, where to be I'm not going to add to that.
Its no big deal man. I watched you play in high school here in Indiana, so I know you know about the Colts. I've watched Peyton Manning throw the football to Marvin Harrison thousands of times. And this season was the first season that I realized how special getting to watch two of the best ever play together has really been. I could watch Colts games for the rest of my life and never wittness what I have with 18 and 88. So these last 10 years have been something truly special as a fan and I just realized it. I've got to wonder if they realize just how special their time together has been. If they realized that they've got 10-15 years in the league and then after that its over. I wonder if they realized that they were doing something that may never be done again, I wonder if they realized that they needed to enjoy it, have fun along the way? Because I have. I've paid thousands to watch them, wear what they wear, buy their merch. and at the end of the day, I'm glad I did it. I wouldn't trade those memories of them two for anything. Its a special thing for the players and the fans who get to watch guys like them.
Greg, everybody has been telling you that you could be special. And I dont think its really any suprise to you that I believe you could be. But you've got to try to remember these times, enjoy these times. Dont worry about your numbers, go out and do what you've done. Enjoy being around your teammates, realize how special this time in your life is and live it to the fullest. Be a beast on the floor just realize that you cant be on the floor forever and you need to remember how special of a time it was. Just have fun man, everybody is going to want something out of you wether its an interview or a car somebody is going to be asking you for something, learn to say no to little things and the big things. Dont take life too seriously, you only get one, and this is your only time in the league.
Greg I hope I can sit back and say that I watched you play thousands of games and that I watched one of the best to play. I really do. I hope I get to see something special out of you and I hope you understand what it means to me as a fan to be able to watch you play and develope. The NBA and NFL are interests that I have that pull me away from real life. Yesterday the Colts lost, and I've got a million things I could be upset about, but the only thing I can think about is the game. For better or worse you've got the chance to play a big part in my, and millions of lives. In 15 years I want to be watching a 90 year old Greg Oden run down the floor against the pacers and I want to tell my son or daughter how special its been to watch such a great player. They wont understand but I hope you do.
I say all of that but at the end of the day the fans know that you're human. You have a chance to be that for me and millions of others, but I promise none of us want to see you bitter about your time in the league. We want you to be as happy as you are great.
Just enjoy this time man. I know I will.

I just read this article by Quick about the pressure you're dealing with. Man, I don't think there is one person in Portland that expects anything more from you than to be the Goofy Funny Nutball we all have grown to Love in this city. Don't stress about this game. Yes, it is important to a lot of people, but if you aren't smiling and having fun on that court out in front of the fan's then it is all for Not. Truly, no one is going to take away your birthday if you don't put up 20 and 10. Just be yourself, the guy that the city expects to see and hear playing Karaoke. I hope this finds it's way to you.

It looks like the other Blazermaniacs were one step ahead of me. I know you got a lot of pressure, and you want to be the world's greatest center like yesterday. Just be patient dude, and take the weight of the world off of your shoulders. If for some reason you do not average a 20-10 in your first year (with a team full of scorers), I'm pretty sure the world will be okay tomorrow.
Quit dwelling so much on the mistakes you haven't made yet, learn how to play the piano for real (take some singing lessons, please...), and get used to the pros and cons of being a star, both locally and nationally. We're all behind you, big man. Go Blazers!!!
