FIFTY TWO

People of YardBarker Nation, I'm going to tell you all first. The number I'm going to wear is 52. It's a mix of my high school and college number. So wherever I go, I hope to get 52. I know it's an ugly number but to me it's just a number, and if I do good I think one person may wear it. I know the number 20 wasn't that attractive, but as the year went on it grew on me. This one will too. One last thing, thanks LZ, ESPN, and Rachel for putting me on the cover of the magazine, making me look good, and giving me a lifetime memory of me being able to say that I was cool at one point in my life. Thank You.

That number is a good choice I think its cool how you mixed your high school and college jersey to pick your number. I don't know of any other player who has done that. By the way what player are you looking forward to playing against the most?

G.O. - It's great to read your blog. Even though I'm a fan of a team other than Portland and Seattle I'm going to pick up a Blazers (or Sonics?) shirt with #52. And maybe something for my 3-year old son (who gets after a soccer ball like a hound on a bone!). I'm old enough to be jaded about sports stars as role models for my kid(s) but I'm starting to dig the idea of my son wearing your number.

#52 to me means Buck Williams! My all time favorite player before Iverson and LeBron. I love it Greg. I think the number fits you very well. Just don't wear any wristbands or knee pads like "corny ass" Patrick Ewing did.....

That's a good number. Not too common. Buck Williams wore that when he was a Blazer, and he's one of the most revered Blazers ever. Hopefully you'll be the next Blazer to wear it. Either way, good luck!

If you wear 52, you'll be responsible for kids all over choosing that as the number they wear in HS or in their kid's leagues. It'll be like what MJ did for 23.

Neat blogs. I enjoy them. I'm calling this early, but CONGRATS on your selection as number 1 and WELCOME TO PORTLAND.
I have been a Blazer fan since the early 80's. We have had a lot of quality individuals play in the Blazer uniform - too many to list. The ones that stand out to me are Drexler, Porter, Walton - quality players on and off the court. The Blazer organization lost me over the last five years with players that were swearing at refs in front of courtside fans/children, doing illegal activities in the community, and belittling the fans that helped make this such a proud organization.
We are certainly moving the the right direction with Brandon, LaMarcus and other young players and it is so refreshing to once again see players that respect the community and Blazer uniform.
Please, help our once proud organization continue to move in the right direction. Like myself with Calvin Natt, Billy Ray Bates, and Jim Paxon -- be that player that parents are PROUD to see their kids pretending to be on the playground.

But seriously, I got a better idea. Your jersey number should be 5.3.
That was the percentage probability that the Blazers would get the glorious first pick, and since they'll use it for Greg Oden, that should be Greg Oden's number!
Besides, not even Agent Zero has a jersey with a decimal point! (Granted, you might have to talk to David Stern about that part, but he loves ya, so, no problem.)

Hey- congrats on #1, not that anyone was surprised- but what an accomplishment!
I've been a Buckeye fan for as long as I remember- and yes, I started out solely football, but I've followed bball since I was in college during the Michael Redd era. Anyway, every loyal Buckeye is so happy for you and so proud of you...
I was sitting here watching the draft and wanted to look up some of your comedic comments, and stumbled across your blog. I absolutely love that you have this- how well spoken you are, how honest and humble and REAL. So I've been sitting here reading this (except for when my boyfriend called and asked me to look up some #s for towing places since he locked his keys in the car) and I just have to say I wish you nothing but the best!
I also have to say that my boyfriend told me to do something productive, like start getting a flier together so we can put my house on the market, instead of reading your blog. (He's cranky- the whole key thing, plus he's a Tarheel...) So I thought I'd combine the two... any chance you are interested in purchasing a house in Lima, OH? I know you are headed to Portland, but would your bro want to come and play for the powerhouse bball program at Lima Senior? Gaffney is a great man, and he could use some players!

I just have to tell you..I graduated from Lawrence Central in 1990. It is sooo nice to finally see someone come from the Lawrence family and make something of themselves. I heard your interview the other day on the radio before the draft and I have to tell you I was completely impressed. I now know that you went #1 overall (you rock)! You sounded so down to earth and so refreshing, I wish you all the best in the NBA!

My brother, Cameron had one of the greatest years of high school as a member of the Lawrence North basketball squad. Although shot lived, lol! I am just mad that he never got me a signed basketball or photo of you that I requested on numerous times. He has always said that you are a kind and genuine person. May these qualities serve you well. I hope that Cameron will have more exciting days ahead at Purdue this fall. He was blessed with an academic scholarship...I guess I'll forgive him for not getting that autograph! Have a very bright and blessed future! I wish you and your family well!

Greg Oden the 1st pick of the 2007 NBA Draft was selected to the 2nd Annual 2006-07 College All-Dunkadelic First Team and named the team MVP. Kevin Durant the 2nd overall pick was an All-Dunkadelic Team First Team selection and named MVP runner-up.

Greg, I'm proud that you chose a number that has such significance to the Blazers. Buck Williams was as much of an asset off the court as he was on the floor. Likewise, Reggie Milller did so much volunteer work around Indianapolis, without seeking the publicity that might have gone with it. I see you fitting into the same mold as those greats. Welcome to Oregon.

Greg - I think it's cool the way you came up with the number 52, and I also like that you're you're own man and not trying to model yourself after anyone else's number. Because let's face it - the world has never seen the likes of a talent like you ever before! You'll do for your number what Jordan did for 23 and I expect to start seeing the number 52 showing up in sports arenas, shopping malls, or practically anywhere else you can imagine!
