Another Bump In The Road
I've been here in Portland working out with the team, getting down to business. I have been having fun guarding LaMarcus and Channing. Those guys are really good. I've also been learning a lot from guarding them too. We have been lifting, running, and playing. I finally felt like i was getting into really good shape, which i was told is one of the most important things in the game of basketball. On my vacation earlier this summer i got up off the couch and remember my knee having a sharp pain in it. That was about a month ago. I didn't tell anyone because i didn't want to seem like i was complaining or making excuses for anything. Plus i wasn't doing anything at the time i realized it hurt, so i figured it couldn't be anything big. After a couple of weeks, i had to finally tell someone so i went to St. Vincent's Sports Performance (where i worked out at before draft) and got my knee looked at. That was right before i moved to Portland for good. My knee was swollen since i was there. I finally just said that i need to tell my trainer because this is not normal. We went to the doctor's the next day to get a MRI and that night me and my mom ended up in the doctor's office being told that I have to get surgery. It's a light one, just a scoop, but still it's just another setback. I would like for me to be playing and not seem like i'm a high maintenance player, but things just keep popping up.

Not sure if you are familiar with Reiki but it is a Japanese relaxation technique the promotes healing. Sometimes it has dramatic results. I have been attuned to perform Reiki but there are also master Reiki practicioners in portland like my Teacher. I plan on working with my teacher to send you Reiki and would be more then willing to give you a treatment if you wanted one. I urge you to do visualizations of your knee being healed and whole on a daily basis. This will help your body to promote it's healing process. I just about lost it last night when I first heard. I did the guest blog on Blazersedge.com and was horrified that same day when I heard the news. I want you to know that I for one will support you through thick and thin. Be healthy long term and don't worry about making a come back too soon just because the fans or media are restless. The National media of course will have a field day with this because they are vultures but that is just their nature and when you are helathy again they will love you all over again, that is their nature. Best thoughts of peace and healing sent your way. Be well Greg.

I'm one of hundreds of Ohio State grads in the Portland area, and I've been a Blazers' fan since I moved here in 1974. We're really excited you're here in Portland. There has been a fair share of controversy regarding centers, injuries, and draft selection with the Blazers over the years; let all the speculation and criticism roll off you like water off a duck's back. Take care of yourself and return when you are ready and blow off the unwarranted criticisms and speculations as to what should have. I look forward to your healthy return to the Blazers.

Thank you for the candor in sharing your situation with the public. You have many fans in Portland. The true fans will be patient. A career in the NBA is not something that lasts a week or a month or a season. You are a young man with many years ahead of you. Get your body right and then give it your all. It is not where you start that matters, but where you finish. La Marcus was not well enough to start last season, but he sure did impress with the way he finished. This is a marathon, not a sprint. Let the docs fix what needs fixing, and then get out there and play. Best wishes for a speedy recovery,

Take a deep breath, relax, and don't sweat it. You couldn't possibly be in a better place for this particular 'bump' than Portland. We've been through it before (Arvydas Sabonis and Sam Bowie), and we weathered the storm just fine. We know the value of patience. You are a member of the great Trailblazer family now, so you will get all the love and support you need. The most important thing is that you take the time to make sure you are 100% before you even think about stepping back on that court, because 100% is what we will be expecting from you when you do (we Blazers fans are kinda funny that way). Chin up, man. As Mark said above, we've waited 30 years... we can wait a little longer.

Well man this must be really hard for you and I want you to know everyone I know is pulling for you to heal up and not to worry about it. Just work on keeping your head up. I broke my back in a car accident 11 years ago and I know all about major pain like you are feeling. There is nothing for it but to surrender to being in pain for awhile. When it's gone you will have a memory for a lifetime. I have no doubt you will come back stronger then ever.
Heck, when you can be up and about again in a couple of months you will start rehabbing. You can work on your hook shot and free throws flat footed. You'll have tons of time to play games and watch movies and you'll get to travel with the team and learn the NBA game. You could do some reading too. Try reading hot and rolling about the 1977 Championship Blazers. If the knee gets you down you could read "The Power of Now" by Eckhart Tolle it's an amazing read. Don't worry Greg the fans will be there for you regardless of what happens. Take care, find some peace in this situation if you can.

You're body is out of alignment because one leg is longer than the other, and thus all these hip, back and knee issues. Thats well known. How can you get your body back into alignment? I say do yoga
YOGA, with perhaps a dose of pilates and other work with top notch physical therapists, will save your carreer! I'm a 35 year old man who loves loves to play B-Ball. About 5 years ago my right foot started burning, then went numb. With no health insurance and no clue, I just dealt with it for about 2 years. Various stretching excercises helped, but I was (and am) an idiot for not getting it looked at. Finally I saw a physical therapist and started taking yoga classes. Just this year I was finally able to play on both legs, and I've almost got my balance back. Guys I used to kill I'm starting to kill again. Guys who played with me over the last few years are looking at me and wondering how I could get so much better even though I look about the same and they rarely see me at the court (meaning I'm actually playing less than I used to).
The answer is YOGA. Start it as soon as your leg is ready, and do it relgiously. There's lots of good teachers in Portland. See all of them...

I have recently been diagnosed with scoliosis(curvature of the spine) and realize that was the culprit in a lot of weird injuries over the years, including a hip, yes a hip that popped out while playing basketball. It made me realise that 1 problem with your physical structure can make you look "injury prone". Everything is compensating for the problem and your body starts falling apart.
When I heard about the injury I watched Greg running down the court on YouTube...and pompous as it may sound, I do believe I saw a hitch in his run. The reason I can recognize this is because of how I move on a daily basis because of my affliction. My immediate after watching this was, "man, can they lengthen his leg even .5 inches, while he's down anyway? Along with the new article about how GO "walked like an old man...." I would imagine his walking, durability, moves/coordination, energy levels, you name it would improve GREATLY!(Not that they were bad as a #1 pick anyway, but imagine afterwards).

Players like Zach Randolph have had procedures similar to yours and come back to be 20-10 men in this league. And Zach isn't half the player you can be!

College out here doesn't start until the end of Sept, so you will be in time if that is what you wish to do. Another idea might be to run for Mayor of Portland. You are so popular you would win in a walk. Trouble is, your term in office wouldn't start until Jan '09, when you will be a full time NBA star! Best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery,

In the meantime, you can exercise your mind by watching the other centers in the league play, learning what it takes to play with them, and visualize yourself doing that.
Here in Portland we've lived through years of not great playing teams, and if the Blazers aren't great this year either hey, we'll live. The important thing is you take the time to heal thoroughly, and get back strong for next year. I'll keep a good thought in mind for your healthy, strong knees,

As a husband of a beautiful wife, and father of a 16 year old, I had to take a few moments to write you with what you're facing. As a Blazers season ticket holder, and a follower of this team since the 75-76 season, I can only tell you how very sorry I am to hear of what happened to you. I can't imagine being a 19 year old, having people place so much pressure on you to resurrect a city's love for it's basketball team. I can only imagine the difficult time you must be having with all of what has transpired with your knee. Being a person with bad knees myself, I know it can be a frustrating thing to have set backs, especially when people are counting on you. I don't know if you read the comments on your blog, but I really hope you take the time to read this one. I want you to know that I am praying for you. I'm praying that you rest, and heal, and take whatever measures you need to do to find peace with things. Don't listen to the people out there who would knock you around because of a physical thing that no one knew was present. As you know... that's not your fault. You're a 19 year old young man who has missed out on many things in your life that other 19 year olds get to experience... all because you have the God given gifts of having great size and basketball skills. Now, because you have to rest, I hope you will give yourself time to not feel pressured to do anything but heal. You only get one chance at life. Basketball is only a short portion of that entire life span you will have. You have places to be, a family to lead, and challenges ahead that you may not feel like you're ready for, but you will be... in time you will see that. I suppose what I'm trying to say is give yourself some slack... this wasn't your fault, and I don't care if you ever pick up a basketball and play again. I just feel for the person that I heard about on the radio yesterday from Kevin Pritchard who said

Don't for ONE second get down on yourself or feel sorry for your unfortunate injury. We as a city and base of fans stand behind you 100% and wish you nothing but the best and a full recovery. Take your time, go at your pace, listen to your doctors, and keep your chin up.

it should really make you feel good about wearing that uniform that you will be putting on in another year.

I am so glad you are a part of this team and this community. You ARE still here. You ARE still part of the team. We may not get to see you play ball for a while, but we are STILL GLAD YOU ARE HERE.
Come to the games when you can (because we'll miss you when you don't), GET HEALTHY, and know that next season when they call your name over the P.A. system at the Rose Garden as you run out onto the floor the noise we fans will make might just blow the roof off the building.

Anyone who doubts for a minute your dedication and love for this game needs to look at what you did last year. After your surgery on your wrist, you taught yourself to play with the other hand. I know how bad you feel about this, but it sounds like you've got tons of love in Portland. Absorb all the love out there and keep your attitude positive. :-)

You are such a shining star to the NBA. Just hang in there and believe! I was one of your biggest fans at OSU and continue to follow you every day since you left. Believe in the power of positive thinking and know that there are so many who want you to heal! Just remember one day at a time. Pam

Sorry to hear the sad news about the knee and the season. I know things must be tough for you right now, but I hope you know that your true fans have your back no matter what. Life is not easy and can be cruel, and how you react to adversity is what will eventually shape you as a man. Some people cower and back away when things become difficult, others accept the challenge and do whatever it takes to come out on top. I have no doubt that you fall into this latter group. Don't let the haters get you down, but at the same time don't forget what some these people are saying. Use it as fuel during your rehab . I'll be laughing with you when you shut all those people up.
Now comes the hard part. . . work through it and I promise you that better days lie ahead. All of us are rooting for you, best of luck.

Its not only blazer fans that are wishing you a speedy recovery it is anyone that cares about another person. So take care of yourself and don't try to return to fast because we want you to heal totally so that you wont have to be in pain. You can still be there to support the team and fans. Saw you at the theater the other night for Superbad. It must be difficult to deal with everyone pestering you while you are trying to enjoy a really funny movie. I thought about coming up to you for an autograph but saw everyone hounding you and felt it wasn't right. Especially those who talked about season tickets and all of that while you were sitting there waiting for your friends to get out of the bathroom.
I am a season ticket holder, this is in fact my first year. I got the nosebleeds because well its all I could afford. I am a blazer fan as a team, but honestly your character brought me that much closer to respecting this team again. I could care less whether you play one game this year as long as your enthusiasm is on the sidelines. I respect that more than anything else.
Get better and if you need some partners for Halo 3 when it comes out, you have an open invite to my place.
